Abstract: Ms. Ilya Espino de Marotta and Mr. Michael Newbery will present their knowledge and experience working on the Panama Canal Expansion Program.  Ilya will present a brief history of the Panama Canal, the economic and political reasons behind the expansion, how it is now performing, and what is the future for the Panama Canal. Mike will first focus on all the technical studies associated with the various canal expansion alignment alternatives, additional water supply projects, and lock-type alternatives.  He will then discuss the many challenges faced during final design, construction, and commissioning of the Third Set of Locks that was achieved in 2016.

Featured Speaker’s Bio: Ilya is the Deputy Administrator and Vice President for Operations of the Panama Canal. She began her career at the Panama Canal in 1985. She has more than 30 years of experience on the waterway, having worked in many of the organizations’ diverse departments. Previous to her appointment as Deputy Administrator, she was Vice-President of Maritime Operations, responsible for Canal transit operations, emergency response, marketing analysis, and customer affairs. As a marine engineer, she is most notably known for her leadership role as Executive Vice President of Engineering in charge of the Panama Canal Expansion Program. Additionally, Ilya oversaw Canal investment projects, construction contracts, purchasing, and the construction of the first bridge spanning the Canals’ Atlantic entrance.

Speaker’s Bio: Mike Newbery is a Stantec Vice President, Power and Dams. Starting in 1999 he led studies of the canal expansion alignment alternatives and additional water supply projects.  Subsequently, Mike participated in studies of lock-type alternatives in support of the Expansion Master Plan.  From 2008, he led the tender design team that assisted in winning the design-build contract for the Third Set of Locks, at $3.4 billion which is the largest component of the Panama Canal Expansion Program. He then led the design team for the next 8 years through the commissioning of the Third Set of Locks in 2016.  Mike has more than 35 years of experience working on dams, canals, and hydropower projects. Out of Chicago, Illinois, he has delivered innovative solutions for projects around the world.
